Organizing Resolution

This is a time of great opportunity for the Labor Party. Corporate America is losing legitimacy as each new wave of corruption unfolds. The Labor Party alone has a program and an organizing approach that speaks directly to the problem: systematic corporate greed.

We offer workers the strongest, clearest, most coherent analysis of the corporate assault on working people, and we offer a vision and platform that forcefully speaks for the needs and aspirations of all working people. We counter their corporate greed with our American dream – for a just and equitable society.

Our organizing style builds upon campaigns and approaches that can capture the imagination of large numbers of working people. Labor Party organizing focuses the attention of working people both on the ills of corporate greed, and on the rights and benefits that should belong to all - just health care, free higher education and genuine worker rights. By growing our campaigns, we seek to reshape the national political discourse.

As a Labor Party we can develop campaigns on issues that point out the failure of the two major parties and their corporate backers.

* Our party can speak freely for Just Health Care without worrying about contributions from HMOs or drug companies.

* Our party can call for the constitutional rights for all workers without first checking with the Fortune 500.

* Our party can call for free higher education without worrying that increased domestic spending will get in the way of tax cuts for the rich.

These campaigns open and enhance the discussion of why a Labor Party is vital for all working people.

Our organizing approach is adaptive and innovative. It evolves and grows as we meet new challenges and achieve new successes. As our campaigns develop, we need to find flexible structures for increased participation and support. For example, we need Issue Organizing Committees (IOCs) to help build mass participation in our campaigns. IOCs, which can be local, regional or national in scope, will allow each campaign to encourage grass roots participation in educating and recruiting new participants. By becoming the infrastructure of each campaign, IOCs allow campaigns to spread and influence the political dialogue within a wide variety of institutions and locations.

Labor unions provide institutional support and credibility crucial to the party's growth. And therefore, our organizing approach also must focus on building affiliations among our core constituencies. There is no magic bullet. We always have and always will experiment with a wide variet of approaches to secure and enhance such commitments. We always have and always will tap into the incredible skills, energy and commitment of affiliates and individual members. We always have and always will learn from our successes and failures on the ground. Our approach encourages Labor Party affiliates to find ways to tailor the national campaigns and recruitment materials to the specific industry and sectoral needs of allied workers. We encourage innovative education and outreach programs that can facilitate affiliation.

To succeed we must combine imagination with discipline, experimentation with focus, and action plans with resource realities. As the corporate world stumbles, our campaigns could grow significantly. We need to recommit to those that are underway and sharpen our plans. At the same time, we need to consistently encourage affiliates to innovate and experiment with new approaches. Our potential is vast if we can effectively harness our energies without stifling our creativity.

Therefore be it resolved:
1. That the Labor Party recommits to our three core campaigns - Just Health Care, Workers Rights and Free Higher Education - as well as our current electoral policy.
2. That the INC develop, test, and refine the procedures for launching Issue Organizing Committees to support these campaigns.
3. That the INC continue to review and develop recruitment plans to increase affiliation and membership.
4. That the Labor Party encourages affiliates to enhance recruitment through education and industry-specific organizing plans.

To turn these resolves into realities requires that all of us redouble our efforts. The INC and national staff form the core of our collective leadership. They allow the Labor Party to bring together the many dedicated leaders and activists from so many different walks of life. Together we will push harder to make our organizing agenda a reality. Now is the time to bring our message home. By working together, by focusing our work, and by supporting our innovations, we can become the answer workers are looking for – the answer to corporate domination.
