FAQs about Build the Future: Labor Party Convention & Conference

Who is eligible to attend?

Any member in good standing of the Labor Party may attend as one of seven delegate types. Affiliating and endorsing unions are entitled to votes and may send up to five delegates per vote. Non-members are encouraged to attend as conference participants.

Where is the Convention being held?
The Labor Party Convention is being held at the Capital Hilton Hotel, a union hotel, in Washington, DC. The dates are July 25-28, 2002. The Labor Party has reserved a block of rooms at a rate of $124 per night (plus applicable taxes for single or double occupancy). To reserve a room at the convention rate, call 1-800-HILTONS (1-800-445-8667) and request the group rate for Labor Party. Rooms are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Note that the special rate is guaranteed through June 24 ONLY.

When should I arrive?
Plan your arrival for the afternoon of Thursday, July 25. The opening session will run from 6 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. The educational conference sessions on Friday, July 26, start at 9:30 a.m. and conclude at 6 p.m. The Constitutional Convention will convene at 9 a.m. on Saturday, July 27, and conclude at 6 p.m. A half-day is planned for Sunday, July 28, concluding by noon.

How do I register to attend?
Indicate what type of delegate you are or if you are a non-delegate conference participant. Send this along with your name, address, phone number, email address, and registration fee to the Labor Party office at Post Office Box 53177, Washington, DC 20009. You can also register online. If you are an appointed or elected delegate from an affiliated or endorsing union, state organization, chapter, or local organizing committee, your registration must be submitted on the letterhead of the union or organization.

What are the types of delegates?
There are seven types of delegates: • Representatives of labor organizations • Representatives of Labor Party state organizations • Representatives of Labor Party chapters and Local Organizing Committees • At-large • Representatives of designated workers' organizations • Members of the Interim National Council • Fraternal (non-voting)

Note that if you are an appointed or elected delegate from an affiliated or endorsing union, state organization, chapter, or local organizing committee, your registration must be submitted on the letterhead of the union or organization.

What is the cost?
Registration for all delegates is $75. Non-delegate conference participant registration is $50. Conference participants are entitled to participate in all conference proceedings; however, they may attend the convention proceedings only as observers.

What are the deadlines?
– May 27: Resolutions and Constitutional amendments must be postmarked or received via fax at 202-234-5266.
– June 24: Last day for guaranteed convention hotel rate
– June 28: Delegate registrations with payment must be postmarked
– June 28: Last date to resolve all debts to the Labor Party in order to attend the Convention

Who can submit resolutions and constitutional amendments?
Resolutions may be submitted by any affiliated organization or member of the Labor Party. Constitutional amendments may be submitted by any affiliated organization. They must be postmarked or received by fax by May 27.

Are there any airline discounts?
Three airports serve the Washington, DC area: National, Washington Dulles, and Baltimore-Washington International. The Labor Party has negotiated discounts with two airlines.

US Airways is offering a 10% discount off unrestricted "Y" fares with seven day advance reservations and ticketing required and an additional 5% discount by ticketing 60 days or more prior to departure. To obtain these discounts, you or your professional travel consultant must call US Airways Group and Meetings Reservation Office toll free at 877-874-7687; 8 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Eastern Time. Refer to Gold File No. 95192316.

Southwest Airlines (serving Baltimore only) is offering a 10% discount on most of its already low fares for air travel to and from the event. You or your travel agent may call Southwest Airlines Group and Meetings Reservations at 800-433-5368 and reference ID Code J4433. Reservations sales agents are available 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday or 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Central Standard Time. You must make reservations five or more days prior to travel to take advantage of this offer.
