Labor Party Affiliation

Who is eligible to affiliate?
Organizational membership in the Labor Party is open to International Unions, locals, districts, lodges or any other designation rendered by an International Union; state federation and central labor bodies; and other organizations deemed worker supportive by the Labor Party’s National Council. Affiliates shall, by official act, accept and abide by the constitution and principles of the Labor Party and shall pay an annual affiliation fee.

What does it mean to affiliate with the Labor Party?
Affiliates help build a strong base for the Labor Party and provide financing necessary to conduct our day-to-day operations. Affiliation is also the first step in gaining representation on the National Council, the governing body of the Labor Party. Affiliate unions receive a subscription (six issues per year) to our newspaper, Labor Party Press, and receive the monthly PartyBuilder newsletter.

What is the cost of affiliation?

Locals/Lodges/Districts/Councils
100 members & under: $50 per year
101-500 members: $100 per year
501-2500 members: $250 per year
2501-5000 members: $500 per year
5001 or more members: $1,000 per year

AFL-CIO central labor bodies: $500 per year
AFL-CIO state federations: $1,000 per year
International Unions: $10,000 per year

The Labor Party constitution grants the Executive Board the authority to reduce or waive an affiliation fee on the grounds of hardship or emergency.

What unions support the Labor Party?
Over two million workers are represented by international unions — including the Paper, Allied-Industrial, Chemical & Energy Workers, the United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America, the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees, the American Federation of Government Employees and the United Mine Workers of America — and thousands of local unions that have endorsed the Labor Party.

Can my union contribute treasury and political action funds?
Yes. The Labor Party is a 501(c)(4) non-profit organization and can receive funds from any source — including treasury money, PAC, education or special funds. Because the Labor Party is not yet electoral, Taft-Hartley restrictions do not apply.

Sample Resolution in Support of Labor Party Affiliation

WHEREAS:
in June 1996, 1400 delegates from nine International Unions, hundreds of central labor bodies, regions, districts and locals of various unions representing over one million workers met in convention in Cleveland, Ohio and founded a Labor Party with a constitution and political program for working people; and

WHEREAS: these delegates adopted a Call for Economic Justice that demands good jobs and living wages for all, national health insurance, decent retirement benefits, quality public education, an end to corporate welfare, a tax system that makes the rich pay their fair share, and other issues important to working people; and

WHEREAS: on issues most important to working people — Nafta, GATT, health care, and the rights to organize, bargain and strike — both major political parties have failed working people; and

WHEREAS: the Labor Party, a political party owned not by huge corporations and the wealthy, but by working people (whether organized or not), addresses the issues that matter most to all of us; and

WHEREAS: in November 1998 nearly 1500 delegates from unions representing more than two million workers held the First Constitutional Convention of the Labor Party and adopted five campaigns: 28th Amendment/A Job as a Right, Just Health Care, Just Trade not Free Trade, Workplace Rights and Save Social Security; and

WHEREAS: across the country, Labor Party members are, through affiliated unions and local Labor Party organizations, taking our campaigns union to union, local to local and door to door; organizing in our unions and communities; and recruiting our co-workers, family and friends — both union members and non-union members; and

WHEREAS: taking on corporate America requires the power of vast numbers of workers united and the power of finances channeled; and whereas: the Labor Party remains a 501(c)(4) non-profit organization with plans to run candidates from the ranks of working people, unions may contribute treasury money, PAC, education or special funds;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT: _________________________________ develop an organizing strategy to build the Labor Party — including distributing information about the Labor Party to our members and encouraging them to join and participate in the Labor Party; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT: _________________________________ affiliate with the Labor Party to strengthen the party and give our union/organization more democratic input into the direction and development of the Party.
